A History of Popular Music – The 1960s

Indulgent and dreamlike, the sixties were a paradox of narcissistic abandonment and heightened social consciousness. Dark shadows cast by escalating wars, racial strife, and political assassinations were dispersed by the light of a generation who became empowered by their aspirations for a more promising future. This confluence of weariness and hope was reflected in the music, which was fighting a struggle for its own liberation.

By the 1960s, a societal smoke-screen that masked the tumult behind a nation beset by war, greed, and social injustice was blown away by a forceful gale of artistic experimentalism, one which blew well past American shores. With musical ambassadors like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones sending shockwaves across the pond, with the emergence of reggae from Jamaican communities, and with a new avant-garde pop scene flourishing in France, the rest of the world seemed unwilling to appreciate American music merely as a spectator, and dance music became a global phenomenon.
