A History of Popular Music – The 1990s

The nineties were allusive years when the alternative became main-stream, the underground crept onto terra firma, and when previously segregated subgenres aligned more closely with club DJs than with pop charts and traditional radio jocks. The Cinderella story of the day was how an unlikely experiment called hip hop became the guiding light for a new generation tired of old methods, with samples and break-beats emerging as the most influential evolution in music since the rise of the electric guitar.

If the ingredients of dance music had all been added to the pot by the end of the eighties, the 1990s were when their flavors fully emerged. Young and clumsy genres like house and techno acquired a European pedigree with the fetish of German minimalism, the flourish of Parisian jazz, and with the force of the most influential British music scene since the sixties. In America, New Jack Swing marked a marriage between hip hop and r&b that crept upon standard radio pop and redefined mainstream charts forever.
