Just In Case You Forgot That I Still Like Guitars

I remember a moment years ago where I officially retired from DJing. This wasn’t exactly a cataclismic event as I was at a level where the difference between being retired and not was pretty slight, like an awkward teenager deciding to abstain from sex. My reasoning had to do with what I saw as the effects of the act of mixing music on my consumption of it. Where I had always prided myself on my musical promiscuity, I now found myself limiting which sections of the record store I’d browse, favoring the 12 inch releases that would fit in my performative pocket over more contemplative full length albums. In physics and psychology the observer effect describes how the act of observation can alter the nature of the subject, and I similarly found that the music I was selecting was altering my perception of music on the whole in a way that I began to find uninteresting.

This is less of an issue with the more contemplative mixes I do for this site, which allow me to cover a wider range of music and are meant to be enjoyed in a bedroom setting rather than a live forum. That said, I do find that my admittedly obsessive process does at least somewhat affect the sounds I gravitate towards. Perhaps most notably, the act of mixing music lends itself to electronic output with drum machines offering connective tissue. With my last few mixes following suit, I thought this an apt time for a course correction where I ask the class to put down their laptops and pick up their guitars. The following is a selection of somewhat brooding and introspective rock music.
