1990s R&B

1990s R&B

With soul in the eighties effectively living under a glass ceiling that saw R&B limited to black music charts in a way it hadn?t since before the civil rights moment, the nineties saw that barrier smashed to pieces with what would turn out to be an unprecedented acceptance of the genre, with its adoption of hip hop production techniques becoming the standard throughout all of pop music. Once liberated, soul music on a whole went on a sort of celebratory bender. Where R&B had once attempted to provide a portrayal of the state of black culture, this latest incarnation of the genre painted an aspirational fantasy that so often resembled a decadent shopping spree inside an opulent nightclub. The club was their new wheelhouse, their mandate was to make women dance, which in turn make men dance, and goddammit, they pulled it off.
