The Official Soundtrack to the American Election
The fact that a reality show star became president is only surprising until you consider how closely modern news media resembles reality TV, which inherently rewards the most despicable behavior. Many of us underestimated Trump’s ascension because his act was so unconvincing, but somehow the same half of the electorate that is inherently skeptical of politicians and liberals was swindled by a New York liberal who changed every one of his worldviews to suit theirs as soon as he went into politics.
And so it was written that the party that apparently draws their morality from Jesus Christ has nominated a man who would have an easier time guessing his daughter’s cup size than reciting a single verse of scripture. A pathological liar who routinely accuses people of crimes with no evidence, puts children in cages, who venerates dictators and insults allies, and refers to every election, court decision, or poll that doesn’t go his way as rigged. Someone who admitted to lying about a pandemic that has resulted in more additional American deaths than Al Qaeda ever dreamed of, who thinks of protestors as terrorists and white supremacists as tolerable, brags about grabbing women by the pussy, calls people names like a poorly raised child, and denigrates American prisoners of war. A man known to the rest of the world as vain, ignorant, vulgar, spiteful, bigoted, dishonest, and shallow. Cartoonishly arrogant yet painfully insecure. He’s a florescent light that exposes the worst parts of America.
Presenting a dry counterbalance to the grotesque excitement of Trump’s vitriolic rise, Joe Biden’s campaign has been about as thrilling as a day spent doing laundry and online banking, but this election isn’t a choice between Coke and Pepsi; it’s a choice between Coke and a cocktail made by Bill Cosby.
As a way to make election night more bearable, I put together a selection of songs and sound clips to be enjoyed with cable news on mute as we all watch America make their decision with a level of trepidation one might feel while watching a baby play with a loaded gun.
