With soul in the eighties effectively living under a glass ceiling that saw R&B limited to black music charts in a way it hadn’t since before the civil rights movement, the nineties saw that barrier smashed to pieces and for the first time since the 1950s it would unseat rock n’ roll as the dominant genre in popular music.
