Under the Same Sun - Music for Summer
If the internet has taught us anything, it's that we don't like each other very much. A cursory look at even the most innocuous online threads serves only to prove how rude people are towards one another once the threat of being punched in the face is removed from the equation. Whether the debate is about Syrian refugees or the ideal moment to flip a pancake, it seems that every subject exposes another layer of the sweeping divisiveness that has come to define contemporary culture.
Music culture is hardly immune to the pervasiveness of vitriol, and in fact predates the divisiveness that defines us online with inherent culture cliques that create a kinship of like minded souls while simultaneously casting those on the outside as the other. Yet music also has the ability to illustrate how the walls that we've constructed between each other are for the most part paper thin.
This feels doubly important in the summer months, with backyard and beachside gatherings lending themselves to a new spirit of inclusivity. Breaking free from the established cliques that keep us cozy in the winter, summer music should be inviting everybody to the party under the same sun.
