I remember being part of a semi-circle in primary school where the teacher asked me what my favorite day of the week was. I responded “Friday, because you get to look forward to Saturday”. I don’t know if my answer made any impression; my guess is that any teacher who is asking her students what their favorite day of the week is was probably phoning it in, but in retrospect I see my response as being what would end up defining me as an adult.

I think I’ve always favored anticipation over realization. The daydream about what might happen next so often resonates more acutely than what actually transpires. It’s the hopeful scent of perfume joining the lingering mist from a hot shower as you get ready for a night out, or the electricity you feel the first time he touches your thigh. It’s holding a wrapped gift, boarding an airplane, or buying a lottery ticket.
