Youth Angst For Grown Ups - Deconstructed Punk, Blaring Industrial, and Angry Rap Music
Maybe youth angst is wasted on the young. I get that school can be a drag and mom and dad don’t totally “get it”, but like acne and remembering how to do long division, these things do eventually become distant memories.
Being an adult, the angst you feel gets more insidious. When the world expands beyond just your own, you find yourself contending with impenetrable issues like fissures within democracy, the escalating nature of regional wars, male pattern baldness, and whatever the fuck the Dow Jones is, all without the inane acts of release that define teenage life, like drinking a bottle of Southern Comfort in the parking lot of a shopping mall and then throwing the bottle into the windshield of a Toyota Prius, or fingering a girl on the bleachers and thinking it’s true love. Very seldom in my current life do people chant the word “chug” when I’m drinking an alcoholic beverage, they are more likely to complain that the wine we overpaid for has too many tannins.
In that spirit of emotional antagonism, I compiled a mix of music that codifies this desire for destructive release. It attempts to find beauty in anger, and to evoke the feeling of a fragile mind coming apart at the seams. It proves that rage is not necessarily a toxic force, that like any other source of energy it can be channeled towards good use. This is the sound of infinite longing and shattering glass. This is youth angst for grown ups.
